Letter to the Editor: Master the garden

In fact, taking a long look at my yard, one might be operating under a totally different set of assumptions! However, my garden looks a great deal better now than it did this time last year.

Right now is the time that our Wasco County Master Gardener program is accepting applications for new members. Membership is only open once every year during the month of January with classes beginning in February.

I have no idea what made me sign up last year. A thirst for increased botanical knowledge? A desire to enhance my personal space? The random wild hair?

Whatever the reason, it was one of my better decisions.

Master gardeners see beyond what “is,” and envision what “can be”.

Master gardeners are not afraid to get their hands dirty.

Or compost-y.

Master gardeners finish what they start and yet are always asking “How can I make this better?”

Master gardeners know a whole lot about the birds and the bees.

If this sounds like your kind of folk, if you have a thirst for knowledge, or if you want to enhance some space, or if you simply need to embrace your own inner wild hair, I encourage you to join me in the Wasco County Master Gardener program.

Call our Oregon State University Extension Office up at our community college 541-296-5494 and get your application in before January 24.

My yard and gardens are gonna look even b-e-t-t-e-r this year. Who knows, by this time next January someone might drive by and say “Wow, looks like a master gardener lives there !”
