Smoky skies on Aug. 13 at Jackson Park in Hood River.

THE GORGE — Cooped up under smoky skies, sometimes for days at a time, folks in the Pacific Northwest have grown used to the inside of their homes during wildfire season. Dangerous air quality works as both a barrier to our great outdoors and a health hazard, and according to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), such circumstances can also take a toll on one’s mental health.

Citing emotional responses like stress, anxiety, and grief as a result of evacuation warnings, disrupted routines, property loss, and prolonged exposure to smoke, OHA is reminding people of mental health’s vital role in wildfire preparedness and recovery.
