Eight new body models on a chassis of 114 inch wheel base, embodying a new six-cylinder valvein-head engine with three stroke inch bore and 4 1/2 inch stroke, is the sensational announcement made by the Buick Motor Co. The new six-cylinder model is to be known as the Standard Six. The body models will consist of a five-passenger double service Sedan; a two-passenger Roadster; a two-passenger enclosed Roadster with heater; a five-passenger Touring; a five-passenger enclosed Touring with heater; a two-passenger Double-service Coupe; a five-passenger Sedan; and a four-passenger Coupe. Probably the most stringing features of the new models are the completely enclosed sedan and couple on the open cars, and the low pressure tires on all models. The cars with the enclosed tops will carry heaters. The tops and sides are so designed that they harmonize well with the distinctive body lines. — Hood River News, July 18, 1924
Wallgren to Run Against Incumbent
The republican gubernatorial nomination was comfortably in the bag Wednesday for Gov. Arthur B Langlie, who led Maj. Louis Wasmer, of Spokane, by more than 53,000 votes. Congressman Warren G. Magnuson walked away with the democratic nomination for United State senator, polling more than 48,000 against 7000 for Martin Smooth of Hoquiam, and 2900 for Mayor John A. Hogg, of Vancouver. — White Salmon Enterprise, July 14, 1944
Rajneeshpuram cut out of county comprehensive plan
The city of Rajneeshpuram’s land use plan was removed from the county’s land use plan on July 11.
County Commissioners Bill Hulse, Ray Matthew and Virgil Ellett, heard testimony for about 30 minutes that morning, recessed the public hearing until 3 p.m. when they took about 10 minutes to pass the ordinance removing the plan.
The action does not affect the viability or integrity of the Rajneeshpuram plan, the county said.
As a matter of policy, the county included comprehensive land use plans of The Dalles, Mosier, Maupin and Rajneeshpuram in the county land use plan. However, in so doing, it means that such time a city adjusts its land use ordinances, the county must make the same adjustment in the county plan to keep them current. — The Dalles Daily Chronicle, July 18, 1984
Mass suicide rumor denied
RAJNEESHPURAM — Rumors that mass suicides would culminate a recent international festival by followers of Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh were circulated by “vicious” people intending to slander the disciples, a spokeswoman for the sect said Thursday night.
Rumors in Wasco County during the Rajneeshees’ third annual world celebration attended by 15,000 disciples last week indicated the followers would climax the festival with a mass suicide, said Ma Anand Sheela, secretary to the mystic.
“They were vicious rumors spread by people trying to gain attention and publicity by slandering Rajneeshees at the scared time for Rajneeshees, the third annual-world celebration,” she said.
“Once and for all, let it be known to everyone that Rajneeshees are life-affirmative, living life fully in every dimension of life and even dimension beyond life. If anyone is living life in this world, this universe, it is Rajneeshees.”
The followers’ celebration of life has caused ill feelings among non-disciples, Sheela said.
“This is why most of the world is jealous and angry toward Rajneeshees,” she said. “The people who started these malicious rumors are committing gross crimes against humanity, against Rajneeshees and against themselves by putting such grotesque thoughts into existence.”
“Already there are enough wars, enough murders and suicides throughout the world. Rajneeshees and the Rajneesh community do not share in these violent act.”
Fearing violence against the guru by non-Rajneeshees, armed guards accompanied Rajneesh during the festival.
“Rajneeshess does not believe in violence, but they will not allow violence upon themselves, either,” Sheela said. “Rajneeshees will protect themselves and their beloved master, Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, in every possible legal way provided to them in the free country of America. — The Dalles Daily Chronicle, July 18, 1984
