The No. 7-ranked The Dalles High Riverhawks extended their win streak to three following a 9-2 victory over Class 3A Amity in a non-league baseball game March 26 at Quinton Street Ballpark in The Dalles.
Pitchers Trey Hodges, Evan Ortega, Cooper Cummings, and Avery Schwartz combined for a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts.
The Riverhawks, guided by second-year Coach Pat Clark, took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, highlighted Cody Agidius’s solo home run to left field. Three Riverhawk errors helped the Warriors tie the game, 2-2, before the Riverhawks outscored the Warriors 7-0 over the final four innings.
“It’s good to get wins, but I don’t think we played up to our usual high standards,” Clark said.
The Riverhawks had a season-high five errors, but outhit the Warriors, 7-1. Offensively, the Riverhawks were led by senior catcher Luciano Alvarado (2-for-3, two triples, two RBI), Sam Shaver (3-for-4, RBI) and junior Finley Corbin (1-for-3, RBI).
“Hopefully, our momentum will continue into the regular season games in the Tri-Valley Conference. We feel like we have a good shot at winning the league title this year,” Alvarado said.
In their previous contest on March 25, the Riverhawks recorded a second straight no-hitter in a 13-2 home win over the Warriors. Shaver (10 strikeouts) and Agidius combined on the no-no. Shaver threw primarily fastballs and said the warmer weather helped.
“Our bats have been hot the last couple of games,” he said. “The competition level in the two games with Amity definitely isn’t as good as we had with Hood River.”
The Riverhawks outhit the Warriors 7-0 and were led offensively by Will Booth (1-for-1, three RBI), Agidius (two RBI), Ortega (1-for-2, RBI) and Alvarado (1-for-2, two RBI).
Clark said Shaver did what was excepted against Amity. “He went out there and threw strikes to get the job done. Now we get a week off and we’ll have a tough opponent in our next game versus Pendleton.” Clark said.
