BINGEN — Along with mayoral candidate Kelsey Ramsey, who attended virtually, the Bingen City Council awaited the fate of its requested Public Safety sales tax. The measure passed easily, with 83% of voters supporting it. The funds will go to support police and fire services in Bingen.
Chief Carl Spratt then gave an update on the very busy past weeks for the Bingen Fire Department. Spratt reported that numerous staff and vehicles were used to fight the Bourdoin Fire, and cited several structures being saved as a highlight. The state will reimburse the department for part of the expenses incurred.
A public hearing regarding the business license exemption threshold drew no comments. Previously, businesses that make under $2,000 are exempt; that threshold will now be under $4,000 to qualify for an exemption.
A second public hearing opened regarding the city’s Critical Areas Ordinance. This policy document must be updated periodically. Changes will be made to accommodate city, county, and state codes with a focus on protecting critical ecological areas. It covers regulations for riparian zones, critical aquifers, forest practices, maximum tree height, wetlands, and geologically hazardous areas. The public comment period will be open until the council’s September 16 meeting. Comments may be made in person at the beginning of council meetings, via email, or by written statement dropped off at City Hall.
A project status update from City Administrator Krista Loney also brought some good news. First, the city has received an additional Transportation Alternatives Program grant to help pay for the construction costs of the Cedar and Alder sidewalks. Loney credited Mayor Catherine Kiewit’s efforts for this award. The first of four bus shelters has been installed near the Society Hotel, funded by a Department of Agriculture Rural Tourism grant. Finally, the city’s car share program has been funded for an additional two years. The Forth Mobility Fund provides a car for city residents to borrow at a nominal fee.
The next meeting of the Bingen City Council is set for Aug. 19 at 6 p.m.
