Police briefs: March 12, 2025

And last week, Feb. 28 to March 7, The Dalles police charged people with attempt assault of officer (one), DUII (one), false information (one), harassment (one), reckless driving (one), theft (one), trespass (three), vandalism (one), and warrant (seven); Oregon State police charged people with drug violation (one), DUII (one), false information (one), invalid license (one), warrant (two); and Wasco County deputies no longer log arrests.

Crashes and smashes — In February, Hood River Sheriff’s Office reported 12 non-injury crashes; and on Feb. 10, injuries that resulted from a single-vehicle crash in the 3600 block of Dethman Ridge Road.

Last week, Feb. 28 to March 7, The Dalles police took four crash reports. In one, a vehicle hit a tree in a Sixth Street parking lot Feb. 28. In another, an intoxicated driver went over an embankment on Scenic Drive, fell about 10 feet — getting a nosebleed — and was arrested for DUII. Separately, a motorcycle crashed at W. Seventh and Myrtle streets March 5. The rider had minor injuries. Wasco County deputies logged two vehicle crashes that week, and Oregon State police logged one non-injury crash: A Silverado rear-ended a commercial vehicle in Cascade Locks and got cited.

Snowboards and stolen cars — Hood River deputies reported just eight thefts in February: Two snowboards (separately), undescribed items (three incidents), stolen vehicle, and theft from a vehicle at Tilly Jane trailhead. They also got one identity theft report. On Feb. 18, a vehicle was stolen and later recovered.

Passports, wine and cars — The Dalles police reported 13 thefts from Feb. 28 to March 7: Generator from vehicle on Dry Hollow Feb. 28, stolen vehicle on Eleventh, unspecified, $219 fox tail gate pad, stolen car from Pomona, shoplifting, car from locked garage on Honey Do, cases of single-serve wine, yard debris trailer from Klindt’s Drive, tools burgled from remodel on 10th, wheels and tires from Sixth, and a can of White Claw.

In one incident, someone climbed a fence on Sixth Street Feb. 28 and stole three pickaxes. In another, a parent and son’s passports were stolen from a vehicle on Eleventh. And a truck stolen from elsewhere in Wasco was found, empty, near Pomona Street Feb. 28.

Wasco County deputies logged three thefts that week, and Hood River logged six from Feb. 28 to March 1: Six theft reports. Stolen vehicle (two incidents), identity theft, shoplifting (three incidents; two at Walmart, one at Tilly Jane’s).

Utility hit — Hood River deputies logged four hit-and-run calls in February. In one, a vehicle hit a utility pole near Tum-A-Lum Lumber, then fled. Another driver was cited for DUII, reckless driving and fail to perform duties of a driver after a crash on I-84, milepost 54 on Feb. 27.

Suspicions of ransom — On Feb. 4, a Hood River deputy responded to a call regarding a suspicious person reporting a kidnapping and ransom at Next Door, Hood River.

Fatal crash — A death resulted from a single-vehicle crash at milepost 73.5 on Highway 35, Feb. 12.

Two injury crashes — A commercial vehicle on I-85 struck a bridge abutment near milepost 63 westbound on March 1, blocking a lane. Driver transported for minor injuries. The next day, a maroon Mitsubish Mirage hit an axle tilt-deck trailer towed by an F-150 near milepost 49 westbound. The driver was cited for driving too fast for conditions and transported for minor injuries. Both drivers got various citations.

Overdose death — A death on W. Second Street was reported Feb. 28, when a male overdosed. CPR and three doses of narcan were administered, before a funeral home was requested. Another overdose was reported at W. 10th and Trevitt March 1. Narcan and chest compressions administered by an officer left the person unconscious but breathing when they were transported to a hospital. Another overdose was reported on March 2, Sixth Street; narcan administered to a person who started breathing again, then declined further medical attention. Another person overdosed in a camp on West Second Feb. 3. An officer administered narcan, then Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue took over.

Deceased — Officers were dispatched to a residence for a welfare check. They discovered the person they were checking on had been deceased for some time.

Various burglars — A Hood River deputy responded to a burglary in progress on Feb. 27. The suspect was found and arrested. The Dalles police reported a burglary on 10th Street March 4, when items were stolen from an outbuilding.

The Dalles’ prowlers — A vehicle on Eleventh was unlawfully entered and a small air pump taken Feb. 28. Separately, two people’s vehicles prowled on 13th, March 4. And three cars were entered on Honey Do Street the morning of March 5.

A mental health call — The Dalles dispatch got just one last week.

Dogs, as always — The Dalles dispatch got 17 animal calls Feb. 28 - March 7: Dogs at large, barking, two Yorkies killing their owner’s third dog. In one incident, an owner refused to surrender a dog that was set to be destroyed due to having bit someone. And Oregon State police found a dog — black, male, white on paws and underside, orange collar, blue leash — alone near the Cow Canyon Rest Area and lodged it at the Humane Society of the Ochocos in Prineville.

Stuck in traffic — Sheriff’s Office personnel and Hood River Crag Rats responded to a crash in the city of Hood River with an entrapped driver on Feb. 13.

Minor crime — A citation for minor in possession of alcohol was issued at Hood River Valley High School on Feb. 19.

Arrested by force — Hood River deputies responded to a disturbance on Feb. 20 which resulted in the use of force. Someone was arrested and a log for disorderly conduct made.

Rummager resists — On March 5, a person was called in for “rummaging through” vehicles at a Sixth-Street dealership. Wasco County deputies and The Dalles officers responded and a taser was deployed, as the suspect resisted arrest. An officer reported probably cause for resisting, escape, and possibly mischief.

Money for safekeeping — In the last week of February, Hood River police made four warrant arrests. In one, a Washington resident was lodged at NORCOR on a Clackamas County warrant; the involved vehicle was towed and more than $32,000 taken for safekeeping. Separately, another Washington resident was lodged at NORCOR on a Patronizing Prostitution warrant out of Multnomah County.

Drunk drivers — In the last week of February, Hood River police charged a resident of Hood River with DUII and unlawful possession of a firearm on Westcliff Drive; their blood alcohol content was more than 1.5 times the legal limit. A White City, Oregon resident was also charged with DUII - alcohol and disorderly conduct at Taco Bell, showing a blood alcohol content more than twice the legal limit.

Tag team — Wasco County Sheriff’s Office assisted The Dalles with a pursuit at Sixth and Pomona streets on March 3, when a vehicle failed to yield to law enforcement, then reached speeds of 85 mph on I-84. Hood River officers helped by blocking exits and attempting, without success, to spike its tires. Wasco County units advised Multnomah County the vehicle was headed their way, then discontinued pursuit. Multnomah County got the vehicle stopped and apprehended the driver and passenger.

Vandalism — A person was arrested on vandalism charges after jumping on the roof of a Gloria Center worker’s vehicle, damaging it.

Illegal mace — Two people were cited for harassment and unlawful use of mace after allegedly grabbing and pepper-spraying a juvenile on First Street March 6.

Meth found — Troopers stopped a black pickup at Second and Webber streets Feb. 28, for lighting and plate violations. Two warrants for the driver were confirmed, and a search located a baggie of methamphetamine, leading to another charge.

Whose gun? — ODOT found a firearm leaning against I-84’s center divider near milepost 106 eastbound. Not being stolen or wanted, it was placed into evidence.
