The U.S. Virgin Islands have long drawn travelers with white sand and turquoise water, but a new global ranking gives beach lovers three more reasons to visit.
Trunk Bay on St. John was named the No. 1 beach in the world in Beach.com’s 2026 Global Beach Index. Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge on St. Croix ranked No. 7, while Magens Bay Beach on St. Thomas came in at No. 17.
Beach.com’s ranking goes beyond simply asking travelers to name their favorite stretches of sand.

They surveyed travel experts and analyzed 93,626 Google Maps reviews, along with 5 years of NASA satellite data and 10 years of climate data. The ranking considered 18 factors, including water quality, accessibility, traveler reviews, popularity, climate and recommendations from travel experts.

Trunk Bay scored especially well with both travel experts and visitors, earning one of the highest average Google ratings. Its famously blue water also helped push it to the top of the list.

On St. Croix, Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge offers nearly 2 miles of undeveloped shoreline and clear Caribbean water. Magens Bay on St. Thomas has a different feel, with a sweeping crescent of sand, calm water and plenty of amenities for a day at the beach.

Why Trunk Bay Came Out On Top
Trunk Bay’s lack of development is a big part of what sets it apart.

Trunk Bay is part of Virgin Islands National Park, which covers roughly two-thirds of St. John. Instead of hotels and high-rises, the beach is framed by green hills and an undeveloped shoreline.

“For me, Trunk Bay is deeply special because it has preserved its pristine state despite calls for modernization,” said Jeff Bell, managing editor of The Broke Backpacker. “I went there more than once and saw the beach still free from urban development, high-rises and commercial noise.”

The natural beauty continues underwater, too. More than 40% of Virgin Islands National Park is underwater, with coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove shorelines.

Jiayi Wang, travel photographer and founder of The Diary of a Nomad, said the beach’s appeal is about more than capturing one perfect vacation photo.

“As a photographer, I have learned that a beautiful beach should look just as special in real life as it does in photos,” Wang said. “A single photo can make almost any beach look amazing, but a truly great beach gives you something new to enjoy everywhere you look.”

At Trunk Bay, Wang points to the curved shoreline, green hills, palm trees, offshore islands and changing shades of blue as part of what makes the landscape distinctive.

Kristin Freeman, founder of FlyOver Travel by Beach Happy, has visited Trunk Bay several times and recently returned with her family. She said famous beaches do not always live up to travelers’ expectations.

“A lot of famous beaches disappoint in person,” Freeman said. “Trunk Bay is one of the few that beats its own postcard.”

There is one caveat. Travelers hoping for an empty stretch of Caribbean sand may need to adjust their expectations.

“Trunk Bay is very popular, so do not expect to have the beach to yourself,” Wang said. “But even with other visitors around, it is easy to understand why it receives so much attention.”

Travelers Are Already Taking Notice
Visits to the USVI are already on the rise. Stays rose 12.5% in the first quarter of 2026, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, compared with a 3.9% increase across the Caribbean.

For American travelers, the islands also offer a practical advantage. U.S. citizens traveling from the mainland do not need a passport to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands.

St. John is reached via the neighboring island of St. Thomas by ferry or boat. Linda Browne, CEO of Exceptional Villas, said the combination of accessibility and natural surroundings helps make the island attractive to a wide range of travelers.

Trunk Bay may have taken the top spot, but it’s not the only USVI beach getting attention. With Sandy Point on St. Croix at No. 7 and Magens Bay on St. Thomas at No. 17, travelers can find one of the world’s top-ranked beaches on each of the three main islands.
