Late summer brings a short window for state fair season, with several major fairs opening within weeks of one another. Four major state fairs are on this year’s calendar, each with its own history and its own reasons to visit. The staggered schedule means travelers who want to catch more than one need to start planning now.
This year’s marquee state fair calendar covers late August into mid-October, just over seven and a half weeks from the first opening to the final closing. It spans four states and four regions, each with its own century-plus identity and reasons fairgoers keep returning.
The Northeast, Midwest, Pacific Northwest and South all host major fairs this fall, with several overlapping on the calendar. Some open before Labor Day while others continue into October, and the difference in timing changes which trip makes sense first. For travelers plotting where to go, the order these fairs open and how long each stays open matters as much as what’s waiting once they arrive.
New York’s fair traces to 1841
Syracuse hosts the fair that started it all, running the Great New York State Fair from Aug. 26 through Sept. 7 this year and tracing its roots to 1841, when the nation’s first state fair drew 10,000 to 15,000 visitors for speeches, animal exhibits and a plowing contest. The 13-day run still blends that agricultural history with modern additions, including a Calming Sensory Room, an Outdoor Activity Sensory Area and Sensory Friendly Hours set for Sept. 2. The nation’s first state fair, founded in 1841, marks its 185th anniversary in 2026.
Minnesota reinvests for 2026
Minnesota follows one day later, with Falcon Heights hosting the fair from Aug. 27 through Labor Day, Sept. 7, a tradition dating to 1859 and known locally as The Great Minnesota Get-Together. Today, the fairgrounds cover 322 acres and include landmark structures such as the Grandstand and Fine Arts Center.
The fair added 36 new foods and nine new vendors this year, part of what the fair says is typically nearly 1,600 menu items spread across nearly 300 concession stands. The additions give returning fairgoers dozens of new things to try alongside the fair’s already extensive food lineup. Add in this year’s new food lineup, and the fair keeps building on more than 165 years of history even in a year without a milestone anniversary.
Washington draws crowds from across the state
By early September, the action moves west, where the Washington State Fair opens in Puyallup on Sept. 4 and runs through Sept. 27, closed Tuesdays and Sept. 9. The fair traces its history to 1900 and describes itself as one of the biggest fairs in the world and the largest in the Pacific Northwest. Fisher Scones, served with whipped butter and local raspberry jam, remain a fair favorite. The Puyallup Rodeo runs Sept. 10 through 13, with the fair’s Dancin’ in the Dirt concerts tied to the evening rodeo performances Sept. 10-12.
Texas marks a 140th anniversary
Texas is another must-visit, running the State Fair of Texas from Sept. 25 through Oct. 18 in Dallas, a 24-day run inside Fair Park. This year marks the 140th anniversary of its 1886 founding. The anniversary falls in the same year as the nation’s 250th birthday. The fair’s 2026 commemorative art, titled “Stars, Stripes, and Howdies,” leans into that overlap, framing Big Tex, its 55-foot mascot, in patriotic red, white and blue for the occasion.
These four fairs are approaching 2026 from different points in their histories. New York is marking 185 years since the nation’s first state fair, Minnesota is adding 36 new foods, Washington is continuing a tradition that goes back to 1900 and Texas is celebrating its 140th anniversary alongside America’s 250th birthday.
With four marquee fairs spread across two months, the practical decision for travelers is which dates work. New York and Minnesota overlap for all but one day of New York’s run. Washington opens during the overlap between the New York and Minnesota fairs, while Texas begins before Washington closes.
