A five-star night in the United States now averages about $370. That same standard, the marble bathroom, the private beach and the brand on the door, runs closer to $250 once an American books it abroad; a gap that held for a second year in a row. More travelers are treating that difference as a reason to fly, and the deepest discounts are turning up in places most Americans have never thought to look, though Europeans have been booking them for years.
For years, the instinct was to treat luxury and location as a single fixed cost, a splurge paid for or skipped. Now, that assumption is breaking down. Travelers are still booking the suite, the spa and the tasting menu, but they are screening for the best deal first and choosing the destination second.
The numbers behind the trend
A five-star night costs less abroad than at home for the second straight year, and use of the budget filter on one major booking platform has climbed 1,800% as travelers look for value before anything else. What that filter increasingly turns up is a full-service resort in a country that never crossed the traveler’s mind.
Albania: A 5-star coast Europe already found
Albania makes it plainest. On the Riviera south of Vlora, Hotel Saranda Butrinti, affiliated by Meliá, sells sea-view rooms for around $100, a brand-affiliated five-star for barely a quarter of the U.S. average. Nearby sit the Blue Eye, a startlingly deep natural spring, and Butrint, an ancient Greek and Roman city that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Americans need no visa to reach any of it, and most of the country’s guests are still Southern European.
Albania drew 12.47 million foreign tourists in 2025 against a population estimated at 2.4 million, according to the statistical office INSTAT, yet the American share barely registers. Europe has found this coast, but the U.S. has not.
The same brand, a third less
The discount is not a trick of lesser hotels, either. Hold one brand still and watch the price move. A night at the InterContinental in Miami typically runs in the high $200s. The same brand in Hanoi, a 359-room tower hotel that is the tallest in the city, tends to run closer to $150 to $200, with entry rates still lower. Same company, same service bar, and the only variable that changed is the country.
Vietnam sits near the floor of what real luxury costs anywhere; a consumer watchdog that checked peak rates across 76 countries found the world’s cheapest five-star there. It was a private beach resort at about $45 a night, an outlier that still marks how far a luxury budget stretches outside the dollar’s home market.
Rhodes: The same deal, closer to home
Greece makes the case without the frontier feel. On Rhodes, about 2.5 miles from a medieval old town that is itself a UNESCO site, the Sheraton Rhodes Resort opens at about $215 a night for a beachfront five-star, well under what the Sheraton flag commands in a U.S. resort market. It is the bargain Albania offers, on an island that already sits on plenty of American vacation lists.
Tunisia: Europe books it, America skips it
North Africa extends the map. In Tunisia, La Badira in Hammamet, a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, offers adults-only suites near $130, its design drawn from the 1930s artist colony that first drew Europeans to the coast and its kitchen built on Tunisian cooking.
The country booked more than 10 million tourists in 2025, according to its Ministry of Tourism, the crowd overwhelmingly European and North African, with Algerians and Libyans alone accounting for millions of arrivals. The pattern holds across every one of these destinations: the value is real, and Americans are the market that has not yet arrived.
Where the discount stops
None of this means every foreign five-star is a bargain, which is worth remembering before booking on the strength of a name. On Bali’s Uluwatu cliffs, the Bulgari Resort prices its 59 villas into the thousands a night, a Michelin-starred Italian kitchen included, for guests not shopping on value at all. A prestige brand in a fashionable place still charges accordingly, so the savings come not from the country but from finding the property that is underpriced for what it delivers. That is the gap Americans are chasing, and it sits below Bulgari’s line.
What the nightly rate leaves out
There are costs the rates do not show; a five-star rating means different things in different countries. Some coastal resorts run well in July and empty out by November, and the destinations winning this attention are already straining under it, with Albania’s Riviera drawing more visitors than its roads and water were built to hold.
That strain is the indication. Every one of these gaps narrows the moment enough people find it, and the finding has started, one new flight and one new international flag at a time. The travelers booking now are not only buying a cheaper suite. They are buying it ahead of the crowd that turns a discovery into a destination, and on this evidence that crowd is already packing.
