MOSIER — Administrators at the Mosier Community School (MCS) say the school and community are feeling optimistic about the positive growth experienced by the students and staff.
A performance by the kindergarten through 5th grade students attracted large crowds at the school and the local tree lighting. Under the direction of school music teacher Nathan Stranz, a group of students sang at the Mosier WinterFest Tree Lighting. The young singers delighted the audience with festive holiday songs, setting the stage for Santa Claus’s arrival and the lighting of the City of Mosier Holiday Tree. Michelle Dawkins is the Executive Director at MCS and she said the school takes pride in offering music education five days a week.
“Mosier Community School is proud to support and showcase the arts, enriching our students’ education and fostering a love of music, drama, and creative expression,” Dawkins said.
Fern Johnson is an elementary school teacher and she has seen and felt the support from the schools administrators.
“At MCS, we have many of the same challenges and frustrations that other schools face, but we have an amazing team supporting us along the way. Our admin pushes us to leave on time, supports us, and treats us as knowledgeable professionals,” Johnson told Columbia Gorge News.
“School board members are in the school, they volunteer, they talk with teachers, they check in to make sure we have what we need to be successful with our students.”
A few days later on Dec. 19, the school’s drama club presented a production of Disney’s Frozen Jr. which was directed by Savannah Rogan. Rogan also teaches humanities to students in grades 6th through 8th.
Audrey Phelps captivated as Anna, while Sadie Davenport brought Elsa to life with grace and poise. Cooper Foster charmed as Olaf, Jareth Galindo Lachino impressed as Kristoff, and Rowan Green skillfully portrayed Hans. Serenity Grace Halverson delivered a memorable performance as Sven, earning plenty of laughs and admiration from the crowd.
The student-cast practiced for three months before performing twice on Dec. 19. According to Dawkins, Rogan is planning another production for the spring.
Registration opens Jan. 15 for students interested in attending MCS next year. Dawkins says there will be spaces available in the kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms. She is also hopeful to expand the middle school offerings beginning in the 2025-26 school year. MCS is a free, public charter school that accepts students from North Wasco and Hood River County School Districts.
