THE DALLES — On Nov. 15, Mid-Columbia Fire and Rescue (MCFR) responded to a fire alarm at The Dalles Middle School (TDMS).
According to a public post made on the MCFR Facebook page, Engine 22 and Fire Medic 21 responded to what turned out to be a trashcan fire in a second-floor bathroom at TDMS. Upon arrival at the scene, Engine 22 reported smoke and the alarm was upgraded to a structure fire, to which Engine 21, Dallesport Fire, Mosier Fire and MCFR 23 and 25 were dispatched.
The fire, according to the post, had mostly been extinguished by a staff member, which was identified in a Nov. 15 Facebook post from the North Wasco County School District (NWCSD) as a member of the school’s custodial staff.
“The Dalles Middle School teachers and staff did an excellent and organized job at evacuating the school in a safe manner,” the MCFR Facebook post said.
The post noted that while the automatic fire alarm system was immediately activated, the fire had not grown large enough to trigger the school’s sprinkler system, though the sprinklers were positioned and equipped to suppress the fire should it have grown larger. “Being the newest school in The Dalles, it has the most fire protection system of any school in the area,” the post said.
Once MCFR ensured that the fire was completely extinguished and evacuated the smoke from the building, students were released to their classrooms upon determining the building as safe.
“We extend our gratitude to our custodial team for their swift action and to MCFR, one of our valued community partners, for their ongoing dedication to keeping our school safe,” the NWCSD Facebook post said.
According to the MCFR Facebook page, the NWCSD, The Dalles City Police and MCFR are working together in an active investigation into the cause of the fire.
