GOLDENDALE — The evolving shape of county government may mean a reduction in the number of items needing a vote from the Klickitat County Board of Commissioners each week. Newly-appointed County Administrator Robb Van Cleave pointed out one of the opportunities to commissioners during the Nov. 25 meeting.
“As county administrator, I notice 11 of the 14 items on the consent agenda would fall under my departments,” he said, “and in the near future, I will be able to speak to all 13.”
Van Cleave reported that the solid waste management plan update was nearing completion, and he hoped to have a draft for commissioners to review at their Jan. 7 meeting. He also reminded them that a two-year grant from the Department of Ecology was to explore the possibility of curbside pickups of organic garbage in Bingen and White Salmon and what tipping fees would be charged by Dirt Huggers at their facility in Dallesport.
Flagpole variance
Under the public comment section, Ty Ross announced a project to put up giant U.S. flag with a 50 foot flagpole. The location was not mentioned, other than in Goldendale, likely near the courthouse. He said the height of the flagpole would require a variance from the city, and would also need the signature of one of the county commissioners. Goldendale Mayor Dave Jones and others spoke up in favor of the project.
Commissioners did not immediately respond to the request in favor of hearing other public comments.
In the formal afternoon session, commissioners approved one short plat and one boundary line adjustment. They did pull one item involving a new phone system for the county off of the consent agenda for later discussion but did approve:
