Funeral homes often submit obituaries as a service to the families they are assisting. However, we will be happy to accept obituaries from family members pending proper verification of the death.
Barbara Lamer (Newman) Anderson, long-time White Salmon, Washington, resident, passed away on Oct. 29, 2025, after a brief illness in Hood River, Oregon, with her family at her side. She was 93 years old.
Born in Willard, Washington, on Dec. 8, 1931, Barbara was the daughter of David B. and Mildred M. Newman. Her family moved to Astoria, where she grew up with her younger siblings, Bruce and Sandra. She married Dean M. Anderson in Astoria on March 1, 1951, a marriage that was to last 74 years! They made their home and raised their three daughters in White Salmon, residing there for 68 years. They moved to Hood River in 2019.
Barbara was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker and skilled seamstress. She often thanked Dean for making it possible for her to be a stay-at-home mom. She often told her daughters that she loved being a mom. Caring for her yard, plants, flowers and garden was a passion of hers — they were always beautiful. She and Dean shared a real love of the outdoors. They took many hikes, went camping, and made trips to the beach. Huckleberry picking with her family in the Mount Adams wilderness was one of her favorite outings. In later years, she and Dean took many cruises, and she was always impressed with the beautiful creations of Mother Nature on those trips.
To those who knew her, Barbara lived by practicing Bible principles and values. It was important to her to share those principles with others of all ages and sorts. She was a generous giver, always finding ways to encourage family, friends and neighbors, young or old, with her up-building conversations, and with cards, letters, gifts and treats. She often expressed the adage, especially to her family, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” She chose to focus only on the good in others. She was determined to never complain and never speak negatively. Her good nature was truly impressive, and people loved her for that!
Barbara is survived by her devoted husband, Dean M. Anderson; her three daughters, Judi (David) Smith, Linda Moore, and Cheryl (Tracy) Woods; four grandsons, Dave (Colleen) Smith and Scott (Kathy) Smith, Ben (Julia) Moore and Gabe (Mitzi) Moore; her sister Sandra (Newman) Cardwell; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and cousins and dear friends, including her loyal friend, Ray Richards. She was predeceased by her brother Bruce D. Newman.
The family welcomes all to her memorial service with her beloved congregation at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 1312 Riggleman Lane (off Loop Road), in White Salmon, on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. A reception with simple refreshments will follow the service.
