Gov. John Kitzhaber has begun accepting applications for a judicial position on the Circuit Court for the Seventh Judicial District to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Paul G. Crowley of Hood River. The governor thanked Judge Crowley for his service to Gilliam, Hood River, Sherman, Wasco, and Wheeler counties and said he will fill the position by appointment. Judge Crowley’s retirement takes effect July 1.
Anyone interested in filling the position must submit an Interest Form for Judicial Appointments to the Governor’s office. Because the form has recently been updated, all applicants must fill out a new judicial interest form.
Interested applicants should mail or deliver the form to: Liani J. Reeves, General Counsel, Office of the Governor, 900 Court St. N.E., Salem, OR 97301-4047. Forms must be received by 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 3. The form may be faxed or emailed by 5 p.m. on the closing date to be considered received as long as the original signed form is postmarked by the closing date.
Gov. Kitzhaber fills judicial vacancies based on merit. He encourages applications from lawyers with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.
ORS 3.041 and 3.050 provide that at the time of appointment to the court, the candidate must be a citizen of the United States, a resident of Oregon and a member of the Oregon State Bar. ORS 3.041(3) requires that this vacancy be filled by an applicant who is a resident of or who has a principal office in Hood River County, Sherman County, Gilliam County or Wheeler County. ORS 3.041(5) provides the required length of time for the residency requirements.
