Campers from around the Gorge came to the eighth annual Columbia Gorge Peace Village this week to participate in what has become a summer traditional at Mosier Community School.
The camp emphasized peace in all activities, from nonviolent conflict resolution core classes to yoga and theater “village fair,” or free-choice, activities. Campers also enjoyed locally-sourced, simple foods served buffet-style, all of which was prepared by volunteers.
This year’s camp was attended by 150 campers and 45 support staff. Organizers offered three payment options — full tuition, subsidized tuition, and full scholarships — to ensure everyone who wants to attend is able to come.
This year, a third of the campers fell into each category, a nice representation of the socio-economic makeup of the Gorge, said Director DeLona Campos-Davis. Major contributions by The Jubitz Family Foundation, Jody Behr, Hood River Valley High School Community Work Day, M.L. and J.D. Hattenhauer, Gorge Ecumenical Ministries and Bethel UCC — and a host of smaller business and individual donations — make it possible.
Peace Village has run under the umbrella of Bethel UCC, located in White Salmon, for the past eight years, and is now working on gaining nonprofit status, which organizers hope to have by next year’s camp.
