Jeffrey Pulk at Cascade Eye
The newest eye doctor at Cascade Eye Center had the goal of finding a great place to work and live.
Dr. Jeffrey Pulk joined Dr. Chris Barbour and Dr. John Willer and staff on Aug. 25. He has lectured professionally on sports eye care, but he likes that his new clinic serves a broad range of vision needs.
“Cascade Eye is the ideal environment for everyone,” he said. “Whether you’re the patient or the doc, the goal with any eye abnormality, need of correction or you have had a physiological change, to have a full service place to get everything taken care of is nice, and Doctors Barbour and Willer and I are always covering each other, always on call, to take care of all clients’ needs.”
He previously practiced Grand Rapids, Mich., and in Traverse City, Mich., north of his hometown of Milford, Mich. “I went from one cherry growing place to another,” Pulk said. He attended school in Big Rapids, Mich., doing his undergraduate work in applied biology at Ferris State University (2001) and his optometry degree at Michigan College of Optometry.
He and his then-wife, Kristen Campbell, moved for a time to South Carolina before deciding to find a community with good weather and recreational opportunities. Pulk and Campbell, who have since divorced, have a son, Anson, 8. Campbell is an attorney with the Hood River firm Davies Dunn.
“We looked at where would be the best place to raise a kid and enjoy the outdoors, and Hood River jumped right off the map. Relatives and high school buddies who had moved to the area helped seal the deal. We went looking for the coolest place on earth, and found it,” said Pulk.
“Hood River is a magnet for happy people who are kind of similar minded, who like the environment, and like other people. People who love life are here,” he said.
Nic Buser at Summit Family
Dr. Nic Buser, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician, has joined Summit Family Medicine of Hood River.
After having completed his residency training, Buser and his wife, Heather, a tax attorney, felt strongly that they wanted to establish a home in a small, tightly-knit community like where they had both grown up. In Hood River they feel that this is just the place where they and their children could grow and thrive, both personally and professionally.
Buser is originally from Shelton, Wash., on Puget Sound. A passion for medicine runs in his family, as his father is an ER physician, and his mother was a physician’s assistant in independent practice. Her practice became Buser’s role model for a type of small-town medical practice based on personal connections with patients over time. He hopes to emulate that in his own practice, explaining, “I want to live in the community I practice, to see my patients at the grocery store and on the middle school football field. I see that my ideals could be a reality in Hood River.”
Buser is a graduate of the University of Washington, and received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University. He completed his Family Medicine residency at the Providence Family Medicine residency program in Milwaukie, and he is board-certified by the American Academy of Family Medicine. He is trained to treat patients of all ages, including obstetrics, and mother-newborn care.
He has two children—his 11 year-old nephew, Preston, his daughter Eleanor, who is 3, and newborn son Charlie.
He has found that walking through the phases of life with his own family has given him new appreciation and insight as he cares for families that have established with him in his own practice.
