CASCADE LOCKS — Cascade Locks Elementary School has officially been recognized as an AVID Showcase School. This designation establishes the school as a premier learning site and a model of educational excellence for the Pacific Northwest and beyond.
Being named an AVID Showcase School means that Cascade Locks has reached the highest levels of implementation for AVID’s college-and-career readiness frameworks. As a Showcase site, the school hosted educators from across the state. These visiting professionals observed the school’s classrooms in action to learn how to replicate Cascade Locks’ “outstanding practices” within their own school districts.
AVID, which stands for Advancement via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college and career readiness. Rather than a passive curriculum, AVID provides a research-based instructional system that empowers students. The program focuses on:
• Organization: Mastering the tools to manage time and materials.
• Critical Thinking: Engaging in rigorous inquiry and problem-solving.
• Success Skills: Developing effective note-taking, goal-setting, and public speaking abilities.
• Agency: Building the confidence and perseverance necessary to navigate life’s challenges.
“We are proud of the dedicated staff and students at Cascade Locks Elementary,” said Hood River County School District Superintendent Bill Newton. “This recognition is a testament to their commitment to creating a culture of high expectations and support. Their work reflects the AVID spirit that is growing across all of our schools in Hood River County. The Eagles of Cascade Locks Elementary have proven that with the right support and individual determination, every student can be prepared for future success in college, careers, and life.”
