WHITE SALMON — American Legion Evergreen Boys State will take place June 15-21 in Stanwood, Washington. High school juniors attend from all over the state to learn about government and political leaders, to debate important issues and be around boys of similar interest. Together, these 300 boys learn to become better informed citizens. “Through Boys State, we are molding future leaders, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to actively engage in and positively influence the course of our government,” explains the Evergreen Boy State website.
The American Legion Evan Childs Post 87 has two juniors attending from White Salmon Columbia High School, Matt Miller and Giovanni Ruiz Sanchez.
Both Miller and Sanchez are looking forward to the experience of attending the week-long camp. Miller said, “I wanted to apply because I think it would be an interesting experience and something you don’t really get in your day-to-day life … I just want to see what is developed.”
Sanchez said, “I thought it’d be a great experience to learn. Help me learn how the government works. I’m really interested in how our world works, and I want to learn more about it. I think this would be a great opportunity to learn.”
American Legion post 87, Ed LaMotte, who serves as treasurer and boys state chairman, explained how the camp is invaluable opportunity for young boys. He also said the friendships the “Staters” experience can last a lifetime. “They develop friendships … and they pass on what they experience to other people and I think these two will have a great time out there, and it’ll be a lot of fun for them, and they’ll remember it the rest of their lives.” Holden Uffelman attended in 2024 as a high school junior, and it was his recommendation that got both Miller and Sanchez to attend.
