THE GORGE — A lot happened in 2023.

Life was … almost normal? … after three full years of COVID-19 shutdowns and, later, precautions. Events that hadn’t been held since 2019 were back. Forest and wildland fires were definitely back. There were the usual staff changes, visits from state officials and business openings. The Gorge saw a couple of well-followed elections in May and November, with bond measures and board members up for a vote.

In a ceremony on Friday, March 24, Mid-Columbia Community Action Council broke ground on the Navigation Center and announced its official name: The Gloria Center, which will serve as a one-stop service center for those experiencing houselessness, housing instability or poverty, containing both an emergency shelter and a host of “wrap around” services and resources. Above, MCCAC employees who had worked on the Gloria Center project did a separate groundbreaking after the initial one to celebrate their achievements as a team.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee visited Stevenson in April to speak with local representatives about the community services provided by agencies and nonprofit organizations in the area. As part of the tour of Skamania County, Inslee participated in roundtable sessions with community leaders and experts on the topics of housing and human services.
