HOOD RIVER — Mann Park, located on Eugene Street at 22nd Street, will receive a playground remodel courtesy of an $82,000 donation from the Hood River Lions Club. Prep work for the remodel is expected in spring 2024, leading to installation.
The new playground structure, designed by the playground manufacturer BCI Burke, will include a main section for children ages roughly 5 and up, another toddler section, an updated marry-go-round, and eight swings. Three benches will also be added.
“It’ll be safe equipment. It’ll be new equipment. And I think it will draw a lot of kids and families into that park that you have never seen before,” Hood River Lions Club member Mike Schend said.
The current park consists of a slide, a small merry-go-round feature, and two swings. The remodel is expected to take up a similar amount of space as the current park, leaving plenty of open grass, which is commonly used for dogs.
The $82,000 donation will include equipment and installation costs. An additional donation of about $5,000 will go towards rubber Poured-In-Place playground surfacing and a concrete border to contain it. The city will cover the remainder of costs for the border and surfacing.
It’s currently unclear how long the park will be under construction.
Jurgen Hess, a member of the Columbia Insight Board of Directors who has a background in landscape architecture, recommended that the surrounding community be contacted and informed of the plans.
The Hood River Lions Club also recently raised $300,000 for Jackson Park. They plan to present another proposal in 2024 for that park to create a playground extension for children with disabilities.
“Thanks so much again for … your leadership on this. We’ll add it to the list of zillion projects you have spearheaded,” Mayor Paul Blackburn said, referring to the Mann Park project.
