Pop Culture Jeopardy! is back, and it is different from Season 1. The game show moved from Amazon Prime Video to Netflix, and fans weighed in on how the first episode of Season 2 was.
Three teams of two — Jeopardazed and Confused, Cheaper by the Cousins, and One Baddie After Another — competed on Episode 1. The premiere episode featured the category “Sounds like 6-7,” which provided laughs for host Colin Jost and the contestants. “6-7” is a term that Gen Alpha coined, which was derived from a meme and features an up-and-down hand gesture.
Aside from moving streamers, the new season has welcomed other changes. Instead of the teams winning one game and then advancing to the quarterfinals, they can now win up to five games. “Things are going to be slightly different this time. Here’s how it works,” host Colin Jost said.
“The winners of each game will advance to play in the next episode, where they cap at five games maximum. After 15 games, the top nine teams will compete in the semifinals for a chance to win $300,000 and be named the next Pop Culture Jeopardy! champion.”
Also, the size of the teams was reduced from three to two people, and the show will now air every day for four weeks instead of weekly for a longer span of time.
The other categories were “Unconventional Talk Shows,” “Annual Accolades,” “The Razzies,” “She’s With the Bradn,” and “Millennial Cartoons.” Jonathan and McShane, or One Baddie After Another, found the Daily Double on clue eight.
They had the lead of $4,400 and wagered all of their money in “Unconventional Talk Shows.” The clue read, “She bills herself as Lady Brittany of House Broski & these two words follow her name in the title of her talk show.”
“What is live and breathe?”The correct response was Royal Court. They dropped down to $0, putting Jeopardazed and Confused, consisting of Becca and Sam, in the lead.
Throughout the round, Jost laughed at contestants’ impersonations and responses that he didn’t think anyone would know. By the end of the first round, One Baddie After Another took back the lead with $5,000. Jeopardazed and Confused had $2,600. Peggy and Ilanna, on Cheaper by the Cousins, only had $200.
Double Jeopardy featured the categories “Movies That Sound Dirty, But Aren’t,” “Alliteration, “Oldies on the Jukebox,” “Damn, She Vine, “Pigs,” and “In Space.”
Team Cheaper By The Cousin found the first DD on clue one in “Oldies on The Jukebox.” Despite having $200, they were allowed to wager up to $2,000, and they did.
The clue read, “In the original opening of Happy Days, this song with a rhyming title played as the record spun.” They responded with “What is Sunday Monday?” which was wrong. The correct response was “Rock Around The Clock,” so they dropped to -$1,800.
The contestants cracked up when Jeopardazed and Confused responded with “What is dick?” in the category of “Movie Titles That Sound Dirty, But Aren’t,” and Jost replied with “I’ll have to explain to you later.”
“My parents are in the audience,” Sam said.
“I’m so sorry, Mom and Dad. I will let you explain,” Jost laughed.
One Baddie After Another found the last DD on clue 24. They had the lead with $20,200 and wagered $5,000 in “Pigs.” The clue read, “It’s never not shocking that George Miller (the Mad Max guy) wrote & directed this very family-friendly 1998 piggy sequel.”
“What is Babe: Pig in the City?” they answered, which was correct. This gave them $25,200.
One Baddie After Another ended with $27,200. Jeopardazed and Confused had $12,600. Cheaper By The Cousin was in third place with $2,600.
“2009 Number One Hits” was the category for Final Jeopardy. The clue was “The rapper behind this song said he wanted to rap about ‘regular guidebook stuff’ alongside ‘the city’s gritty side.’
Cheaper By The Cousins answered, “What is Empir State or?” which was wrong. They wagered all of their money, giving them $0.
Jeopardazed and Confused answered, “What is Empire State of Mind?” which was correct. They wagered $6,700, making their final total $19,300. Jost screamed, “Oh my God!” when he realized they wagered 6-7.
One Baddie After Another also had the right response. They wagered $0, making their final total $27,200. One Baddie After Another will return for another game on Tuesday.
PCJ! fans thought the first game was “fun.” “Loved the first game! Can’t wait to see who’s next up because the premiere is definitely a strong start in terms of gameplay,” a Reddit user said.
“That was a fun first game,” another said.
“Nice to watch a game where all the teams seem like they’re having fun up there! Colin’s clearly more comfortable too, I definitely noticed a vibe shift between the first and last taping days last season,” one last fan said.
