The finale for Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 was a deadly one… just not for the heroes of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Though Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) were definitely in harm’s way due to the big bridge collapse, they both emerged unscathed in the end.
However, according to star and director Kevin McKidd, Owen was almost killed off in “heroic” fashion … until the series’ showrunner, Meg Marinis, talked him out of the idea.
McKidd told EOnline, “I’d been toying with the idea of, ‘What would Owen’s exit be if I decided to leave?’ for a few years. And I always thought that because he came onto the show as this kind of traumatized war veteran, that for his exit, he should die in some really heroic fashion, saving somebody or some kind of really heroic death.”
However, Marinis told him exactly why she didn’t think that would work for his final moment as a series regular.
“I think she was right in saying, ‘There’s been quite a few deaths on the show in the last few seasons.’ So she was like, ‘I don’t think anyone has the appetite for that at the moment, another death,'” McKidd explained. “And also, she said to me, ‘The world’s kind of a dark place at the moment, it’s a little scary. So maybe it’s better to tell a story about a new beginning.'”
Indeed, the finale saw Owen and Teddy (Kim Raver) taking leave of Seattle to head to Paris, France, for an exciting new career opportunity for her at a research incubator. McKidd predicts this turn of fate might land him back on the show on occasion as a result.
“I don’t know how much Owen is going to enjoy Paris. So I think he might need to come home to Seattle a couple of times,” he said.
