HOOD RIVER VALLEY — The Hood River Valley High Eagles won two straight Northwest Oregon Conference Class 5A girls soccer games last week to improve their chance to reach the state playoffs for the first time since 2019. The playoffs begin Nov. 6.
HRV (2-2-1 NWOC, 7-3-2 overall) won its first league contest, 4-2, over the Centennial High Eagles (1-2-1 NWOC, 3-5-2 overall) in Gresham. Hazel Haspela (two goals), Magnolia Clermont (assist) and Keira Brennan scored goals for HRV.
HRV, guided by Coach Leonor Lopez Aguirre and assistant Coach Gio Magana, then notched a second straight victory at home Oct 17, 2-0, over the Parkrose Broncos (1-4 NWOC, 2-7-1 overall). Parkrose scored a goal in the first half as a Bronco defender inadvertently deflected a ball into the net, putting the Eagles up 1-0. Clermont scored a first-half goal to help HRV take a 2-0 halftime advantage. A scoreless second half followed.
“Those were two huge wins for us so we’re back on track,” said Magana. “I think we would probably have to win our last three games to clinch a playoff spot. I think we’ll have a good chance to do that, too.”
The No. 12-ranked Eagles faced the No. 1-ranked Canby High Cougars (5-0 NWOC, 10-1-1 overall) on Oct. 22 at home in a 7 p.m. Senior Night contest. The Eagles play their next contest Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. versus the Hillsboro High Spartans (3-3 NWOC, 4-6-2 overall) in Hillsboro. They’ll play their final regular season contest on Oct. 29 on the road at Milwaukie (0-4-1 NWOC, 4-4-2 overall).
The HRV girls last qualified for the state soccer playoffs in 2019.
