WHITE SALMON — The Columbia High Bruins improved their record to 2-4 (2-5 overall) in Trico League girls soccer with a 4-1 home win on Oct. 3 over the Castle Rock High Rockets (0-4-1 league, 0-5-1 overall).
Following a scoreless first half, the Bruins fell behind 1-0 early in the second half. The Bruins, guided by first-year Coach Parker Walker, fought back with an impressive offensive rally. Kiki Barkhimer, Taniah Barajas, Mariela Casarez and senior Saylor Hauge each scored goals to help propel the Bruins to the victory.
“Our team has a bad habit of going down a goal before waking up and playing to our full potential,” said Walker. “Our objective for this week is to start each game as strong as we finish games. I’m proud of our team for continuing to believe in each other and good results will follow for sure.”
With the victory, the Bruins snapped a four-game losing streak, which included an Oct. 1, 4-3 loss at Kalama (3-3 league, 4-4 overall). Senior Sequoia Cohen, Hauge and sophomore Willow Cohen each scored goals against Kalama.
Walker said: “We were bummed to lose a game that we felt like we were able to win, but I’m proud of our team for battling out a tough game on the road.”
The Bruins were seeking to get a second straight win in an Oct. 8 home game versus the Stevenson High Bulldogs (0-4-2 league, 1-5-2 overall). The Bruins will play their next contest Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. versus the No. 1-ranked Seton Catholic High Cougars (6-0 league, 8-0 overall) at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
