Dean cleared a meet record 15 feet, 6.25 inches (4.73 meters) in winning his fourth title and helped lead the three-person Mustang state team to 15th place with 15 points. Dean entered the competition after all 12 other competitors had three misses at a height. He cleared 4.31 meters (14-2) on his first try, passed at 4.38 meters (14-4), and cleared 4.57 and 4.73 meters on his second attempts.
Dean, who has a personal best of 16-0, won the state pole vault as a junior (14.6.25), a sophomore (14-2.75), and freshman (13-2). His Trout Lake teammate, junior Jayden Kusky, finished fourth in the shot put at 47 feet, 7.25 inches. Gael Fuentes also competed at state in the triple jump.
Horizon Christian School, the District 3 team champion, scored the most points of Gorge small schools at state with 26 (seventh place). The Hawks were led by freshman Charlie Haynie, who was third in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles. His times of 15.43 (prelims) and 41.34 were lifetime bests and rank Haynie No. 1 all-time for Class 1A freshmen in Oregon.
enior teammate Caleb Caldwell placed fourth in the 3000 (9:30.63); junior Brayden Strong was seventh in the 1500 (PR 4:21.74); and junior Landon Whitaker was seventh in the long jump (PR 19-3.5, 5.88 meters).
The Hawks 4x100 relay of Tyler Abbott, Haynie, Whitaker and Judah Garrett was seventh. Abbott, Caldwell, Strong and Whitaker teamed up to place sixth in the 4x400 in a school record 3:38.93. Abbott also competed at state in the 400, Whitaker PRd in the 110 hurdles (ninth, 16.75); and Joshua Carley ran a PR in the 3000 (ninth, 9:48.63).
Lyle-Wishram’s Ezekiel Marble placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.31 PR prelims), seventh in the 300s (42.37 PR), and teammate Jack Thiemann was seventh in the triple jump for the Cougars.
South Wasco County senior Storm McCoy placed seventh in the javelin at 144-0.25 (43.90 meters). Junior Jason Hull raced to a non-placing PR of 17.18 in the 110 hurdles and also ran the 300s at state. Teammate Coy Shirley was 10th in the javelin at 129-0.75.
Sherman’s Renan Christensen was third in the shot put at 48-2.25 (14.69 meters), and teammate Michael Blagg finished eighth in the long jump (PR 19-3, 5.87 meters) and also ran the 200 (23.97 prelims).
