THE GORGE - Hood River Valley’s girls soccer team tied 2-2 with Rex Putnam on Oct. 22, leaving them in position to make it to the Class 5A state playoffs and extend their already successful season.
HRV is 8-3-2 overall (as of Oct. 26) and is ranked fifth in 5A and tied for second in the Northwest Oregon Conference. The Eagles have two games left in the regular season, starting with a 7 p.m. Oct. 27 home match against St. Helens. Their final regular season game will be at Sandy High (11-1), the second-ranked 5A team.
Lily Clermont opened the scoring early in the match against Putnam with a lofty, left-footed penalty kick goal. Putnam tied the match late in the first half. HRV regained the lead four minutes into the second half, when senior captain Kiera Brennan scored off an assist from junior Josie Faaborg.
Eagle Coach Kevin Haspela noted: “Kiera’s goal was really special. She’s the senior captain and she’s been hungry for a long time; she finally got it so I’m really proud of her.”
Putnam tied the match in the closing minutes off a corner kick.
Haspela said: “We are tied for second with them (Putnam) in the league standings, but we are higher than them in rankings. I think in this game, they really needed a win in order to help their playoffs situation, and we needed to get a tie or a win.
“… We’re still looking like we have a good chance of getting into state playoffs which is our ultimate goal.”
Junior Ellie Giordano said, “we learned a lot from this match that we can carry into our game against St. Helens and into the playoffs. No. 1 here we come.” (Sandy was ranked No. 1 in 5A up until this past weekend when North Eugene edged ahead of the Pioneers.)
