THE GORGE — A three-match home stand will go a long way in determining the OSAA Class 5A state playoff standing of the Hood River Valley girls soccer team.
Coach Kevin Haspela’s Eagles enter this week at 7-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northwest Oregon Conference. HRV beat host Centennial, 6-1, on Oct. 13 and has home matches against Milwaukie (Oct. 20), Putnam (Oct. 22), and St. Helens (Oct. 27, senior night). Hood River closes its regular season with an Oct. 29 match at top-ranked Sandy (10-1).
Coach Haspela substituted freely in last week’s match against Centennial. Hood River scored three goals in the final eight minutes of the first half to take a 3-0 halftime lead and take control of the match. Josie Faaborg scored two of the goals and assisted on teammate Cate Haspela’s tally. Ellie Giordano assisted on Faaborg’s second goal.
Nellie Lara assisted on the fourth HRV goal by lofting a corner kick to the middle of the field where Sophie Romero headed the ball into the back of the net. Frosh Alondra Juarez got into the scoring act after Centennial had scored its lone goal. She ran onto a deflected save, bodied the ball off the bounce and kicked it into the net. Ellie Kinsfogel assisted on the final goal.
Trout Lake splits pair
The Trout Lake Mustangs lost 2-1 in 3A/2A/1A Special District 1 play Oct. 12 to Riverdale/Riverside. The Mustangs (7-5 overall, 1-2 district) complete regular season play this week at Oregon Episcopal School and at unbeaten and top ranked Catlin Gabel.
