The opening of the Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site for 2024 is just around the corner, as tours are scheduled to begin April 1. Tours cost $10 per person and all proceeds are donated to the McBones operation.
McBones was created as a collaboration of businesses, community organizations, regional academic institutions and private individuals to develop the Coyote Canyon Mammoth site near Kennewick, Wash., into a local and regional outdoor classroom and laboratory for K-12 teachers, students and community volunteers. McBones provides the opportunity to learn by participating in field and laboratory-based research, relevant to paleontology, geology, paleoecology, forensic science and other natural sciences.
The on-site tours are available April through October. At this time, McBones is taking reservations for April through June. On June 1, McBones will take reservations for July through October.
Tours generally last about 1.5 to 2 hours. They include a presentation about the history, discovery and findings at the site, as well as a a guided tour of the laboratory activities and displays of key specimens and the interpretive panels. The remaining time is spent outside at the dig site.
