JEAN Singleton, daughter of Cody and Judit Singleton, test-rides the “Train of Thought” in the lobby of Church of Christ, where the VBS theme is “Jesus Turns Hearts Inside Out.”
Hood River Church of Christ will be taking a look at what goes on inside our hearts this year with “Inside Out” Aug. 3-7 from 9 a.m. to noon.
Children in sixth grade and younger are invited. To register, call Cody Singleton at 541-490-2696, or show up about 10-15 minutes early on opening day.
Singleton has created a variety of large-scale props, including a “Train of Thought” with engine and cars large enough for kids to sit in, and working lights and “smoke,” modeled in the recent Pixar film “Inside Out.” Each day Bible verses will address emotions of disgust, sadness, joy, fear and anger. Five “classes” throughout the day will form the “train of thought” and involve games including a “sheep stealers” game that encourages kids to herd sheep into each other’s pens, and a skeet-ball board Singleton made. In a variation of “Angry Birds,” campers will also get to toss foam at stacks of cardboard bricks. A “fear factor” exercise will involve plastic worms, snakes and other creatures, as well as a few live crickets. Prizes go to kids brave enough to reach into the tub with live crickets and pull out plastic critters.
The final day will be on the theme of “anger,” in which the parable of the Prodigal Son will help convey the spirit of turning one’s anger into joy at the goodness received by others, according to Singleton.
