The couple spent the next week in the New York City Public Library, reading as many newspapers as possible, seeking opportunity. They secured janitorial jobs in Garfield, but the war transformed those jobs for the couple. The Navy took over this tuberculosis sanitarium, converting it to a convalescence hospital for sailors and marines where Vlad and Nikola stayed for the war years, working as nurses’ aides and in urgencies assisting surgical nurses. This experience was a crash course in the idioms, ideas, and ideals of American culture. In their spare time, by VE Day, they both had earned teaching certificates in their fields. That July they were hired by Warhaven City Schools as high school teachers.
