Since defecting from Czechoslovakia in 1989, Radim Zenkl has become one of the most sought-after mandolin players in the world.
Zenkl's original music crosses the tracks of string jazz, new age, bluegrass, flamenco, gypsy, Irish, middle Eastern and classical music — combined with Czech and Eastern European traditional songs and instrumentals.
Besides the standard mandolin, Zenkl uses many instruments of the mandolin family such as mandola, Irish bouzouki and also pennywhistle, didgeridoo and even a cow horn, to name a few.
Radim Zenkl will perform at The Pines Tasting Room in Hood River on Thursday, Nov. 13, from 6-8 p.m. Suggested donation $15.
Zenkl also appears Nov. 14 at the Balch Hotel in Dufur.
Zenkl recalls his days playing music behind the iron curtain.
“Our band played original music; however we were only allowed to play instrumental music on the radio because the government was afraid that we might be sending anti-communist messages out through song lyrics,” Zenkl said.
