Skeptical in the face of an avalanche of measures, Wasco County and Oregon voters said no thanks, and in some cases no way, to the vast majority of the 23 proposals on the general election ballot. A preliminary tally showed six approved, 14 rejected, two failing and one too close to call. Wasco County voting closely followed the patterns in the rest of the state.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) – Consider it the Great Mars Comeback. Early this afternoon, NASA planned to launch a spacecraft on a 435 million-mile, 10-month journey to the Red Planet as a replacement for the probe that mysteriously disappeared three years ago. The Global Surveyor will be the first of 10 spacecraft to be sent by NASA to Mars over the next 10 years to pry loose the secrets of Earth’s next-door neighbor.
LONDON (AP) – Iran has produced a long-range rocket and Western experts believe Hezbollah guerrillas are using it against Israeli forces and their militia allies in southern Lebanon, according to Jane’s Defense Weekly. The 240 mm artillery rocket has a range of more than 25 miles, the magazine reported Tuesday.

A citizens’ committee serving in an advisory capacity on matters relating to the Columbia Basin Nursing Home today issued a statement giving some of its viewpoints on the operation of the home.
MADERA, Calif. (UPI) – A change of venue has been granted at the trial of three wealthy young men accused of kidnaping 26 Chowchilla school children. The court decided that a trial in the vicinity of Chowchilla, where the bizarre daytime abduction took place, might be used by the defense as the basis for an appeal. “There would be nonsense in giving the defendants an obvious mode of appeal if they are convicted,” Madera County Judge Jack Hammerberg said in making his decision Friday. Hammerberg also ruled that evidence and documents that led to the indictment of the three – and which might contain reference to a motive for the bizarre crime – will remain sealed, at least until a new judge gets the case.
DETROIT (UPI) – A tentative agreement on a new three-year contract that provides greater job security for Chrysler Corp’s hourly workers in the United States and Canada averted the threat of a second auto strike Friday.
60 years ago – 1956
The 100th anniversary of The Dalles chapter of the Odd Fellows lodge will be observed tomorrow night with a turkey dinner starting at 6:30. The local Odd Fellows lodge is the oldest fraternal order in the city, having been established here Nov. 1, 1856, nearly three years before Oregon became a state.
WASHINGTON: (By Frederick C. Othman) – I hear tell from the aviation experts that Uncle Sam has taken another look at the atomic flying machine and decided to kind of go slow with it. The idea for a while had been to get such a ding-bat in the air by 1958; the federal thinking now is to give it a try, say, in 1960. This suits me. If the boys want to put of still a little longer that’ll be fine. Such a plane would have to be a whopper to carry the shielding so the crew wouldn’t atomize itself, but the fuel probably would fit into the pilot’s lunchbox.
WASHINGTON (UP) – Americans in record breaking early turnouts voted today on whether Dwight D. Eisenhower or Adlai E. Stevenson should lead them during the next four years. Apparently spurred by the bloody events in Hungary and the Middle East, they poured to the polls in numbers suggesting that the total vote might equal or surpass the record 61,551,919 cast in 1952.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 6. (UP) — The Pacific coast maritime strike threatened allied transportation industries today. Barge service in San Francisco bay was halted and Alaska’s government-owned “life line” railroad will suspend service temporarily. Lack of freight for the road, which runs from the coast to Fairbanks, because of the tieup of all cargoes from the United States, was given as the reason for the proposed suspension.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 6. (UP) – Administration fiscal plans for President Roosevelt’s second term revealed today to the United Press showed expectations of a balanced budget during the fiscal year beginning next July 1. “The federal government, according to present plans, will be placed upon a pay-as-you-go basis and a reduction of the public debt begun before the middle of Mr. Roosevelt’s second term,” a high treasury official said.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 6. (UP) – Republican leaders predicted today that pressure of conflicting interests among the newly constituted new deal-democratic party ultimately would renew the political balance and return a liberalized G. O. P. to power.
100 years ago – 1916
More than $40,000,000 was stolen by trusted employees in the United States in 1913, a comparatively dull business year. Of this amount the employers in New York City lost about $5,000,000. Only 2 per cent of the defaulters were prosecuted, the other 98 per cent going scot free.
SEATTLE, Nov. 6. – The number of dead in the Industrial Workers of the World battle with a citizen’s posse at Everett Sunday was raised today to seven when Jeff F. Beard, former sheriff of Snohomish county, died of his wounds. Two of the Everett posse are dead and five of the I. W. W. are dead in Seattle. E. P. Buehrer, janitor of the high school, is thought to be fatally wounded.
