Last week’s History Mystery, above, shows junior bowlers competing in the second of three weekends of the Junior Regional Bowling Tournament at Westgate Lanes.” It was published in the Reminder newspaper Dec. 9, 1982, and was scanned from a production print.
There were, at the time, two bowling alleys in The Dalles. Terry Smith noted it was Westgate Lanes Bowling Alley, not the Recreation Lanes (downtown), because of the slope of the back wall.
Another caller noted that he certainly didn’t remember an air conditioning unit, visible in the photo, at Recreation Lanes, either.
Mona Chatterton was among the many who recognized the location, noting that it was next to what was then Westgate Market on Chenowith Loop Road. “The man keeping score was Bob Snyder and the girl bowling is Kathy Frakes-Beck, who is my sister. There was also a cafe in the bowling alley that we would all go to for burgers and fries. Lot’s of fun times there,” she said.
Sue Madsen noted that her two children are in the photograph: Bryan Griffith, showing partially behind the boy bowling, and Angela Griffith Pinchot, against the wall holding a ball. “They had League play in the winter time for the children,” she said.
20 years ago – 1998
Steep slopes and brushy terrain on the western flank of the Rowena Fire slowed work on fire trails Tuesday, but the fire was finally declared contained about midnight. The size of the fire was updated to 2,290 acres, according to Stan Hinatsu, public information officer on the fire scene.
Fighting fires is thirsty work, and three Foley Lakes children found a quenching way to say thanks to the firefighters who worked to save their home. At the last mobile home before the fire, Canby firefighters Mike Lee and Bill Laird find Brett, Sumer and Jacob Johnson waiting patiently by a patio table topped with cooling drinks. “Because they saved our house and our lives and told use to evacuate, we wanted to do something for them,” said Sumer, 11.
A public hearing on the operation of the Gorge Commission will be held Thursday by the Senate Committee on Land Use.
DETROIT — With the recent deaths of 11 young children who climbed into car trunks, locked themselves in and became victims of suffocating heat, automakers are hearing renewed demands for releases inside trunks.

Twenty six pilots and 24 copilots planned to leave The Dalles Airport this morning at 8:15 on a 420 mile race to Jackpot, Nev. It is the first local race of its kind.
Interest in airplanes and airport activity continues to grow in The Dalles with the improvements made by the city to lighting and other facilities. For the past two years, public airshows and events have drawn an increasing number of people.
Smoke from the Willamette Valley field burning swooped over through the Columbia Gorge, blocking out a cool clear sky in Wasco County Friday. The Oregon State Police at The Dalles reported receiving several calls inquiring about driving safety. There were no smoke-related accidents here.

Three New Mexico men took off Friday from Maine in an attempt to cross the Atlantic in a balloon. All three are men ages 31-48. It is the 18th recorded attempt to cross the ocean in a balloon.

Sheriff Ernest Mosier and former District Attorney Donald Heisler are scheduled to go to Olympia, Wash., today with necessary legal papers in hopes of bringing back Harry C. Knowles to start his life sentence in the Oregon penitentiary for the 1953 slaying of Albert Calvin Stuart near Shaniko.

The body of a man believed to be Herman Ritter was found floating in the current of the Columbia River, two miles east of The Dalles, by Fred Miller, a fisherman at Seufert’s, this morning about 7:30 o’clock. Only a cotton undershirt clothed the body.
A heated race for the city treasurer’s post loomed today as three candidates appeared. Mrs. Mabel Ellis, city treasurer for almost a quarter of a century, today declared that she would be a candidate for re-election.
Tomatoes were priced at $1.25 to $1.50 per box on the Portland wholesale market yesterday. Last year at this time growers were fortunate to get 50 cents a box, and 30 cents was a more common fiure. All of which would be fine, except for the fact that Dalles produce growers have very few tomatoes.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 12. (UP)—John C. Metcalfe, investigator for the house un-American activities investigating committee, testified today that the primary aim of the 500,000 members or sympathizers with the nazi movement in the United States is to establish a vast spy net.
DALLAS, Ore., Aug. 12. (UP)—Albert Earl Rosser, 44-year-old dethroned czar of the Oregon teamsters’ union, was sentenced to 12 years in the state penitentiary today for arson after Circuit Judge Arlie G. Walker denied a defense motion for a new trial. Rosser was convicted July 10 of complicity in the $95,000 incendiary fire last November at the non-union West Salem box factory.

J. A. Craft came to The Dalles Saturday to be with his brother, Will Craft, who is confined in The Dalles hospital.
Typing to music is the latest thing in summer school experiments. According to a report it has been tried out in the Oregon Agricultural college. It has been found that beginners take to the musical accompaniment readily, and that the rhythm of the music helps them more quickly to acquire an even touch. If a good march is played in a room full of beginners typewriting at various speeds, a definite rhythm soon becomes apparent and before long the keys are all being tapped at a uniform rate.
