Allied troops which landed on the French coast June 6 are making headway inland, thrusting reinforcements forward expecting German counter attacks. Landings were made along the Normandy beaches. At present 40 miles of beachhead is said to be held with inland penetration of nearly 20 miles in some places. A radio announcer gave out the news Wednesday that Captain Jim Spaulding, of Goldendale, among the thousands of airman that participated, had said that he had not seen a single German plane during his trip. — White Salmon Enterprise, June 9, 1944.
