On Sunday, Oct. 1, the Camas Prairie and Vicinity Pioneers Association met at the Glenwood school for the fall meeting. After a delicious potluck dinner, Harold Cole gave a great presentation about the moving and restoration of the Whitcomb Cabin from beside the BZ-Glenwood High way to its final resting place on the Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Laurene Eldred put together a packet of history of the cabin and the families who built and lived in it.
Harold shared a video of the removal of the intact top part of the cabin and removal of the lower logs separately. One really fun part of the video was of the late Don Warner of Trout Lake using his team of horses to pull the logs to be used as replacements out of the woods to the trailer, then pulling the trailer to haul them to the work site. Some of the lower level logs were no longer usable, so a restoration expert, Kent Olson, used traditional hand tools to hand cut, hew, and notch replacements. The video showed the lower part being rebuilt in place at the new site and the upper part being lowered onto it.
It was a fascinating process that took many hands and lots of planning. It was great to see the late Herman Kuhnhausen out there advising and helping to get the upper part on its moving beams and hooked to the tractor to be towed from the BZ-Glenwood Highway, along Hansen, Lake, and Cemetery Roads to the Trout Lake Highway, then onto the refuge site. Herman, a great Glenwood valley historian, was 90 years old when he came out to help with the final move and placement, in 1986.
A huge thanks goes to Harold for presenting this great part of our valley history, and also thanks to Jerry Dean and Laurene Eldred for preparing the multipurpose room for the meeting and providing some of the Whitcomb Cabin history to go along with Harold’s presentation. If you think you’d like to hear more interesting history of our beautiful valley, please mark your calendars for the spring meeting on May 5 at 1 p.m. at the school.

Tuesday, Oct. 2, our high school volleyball team played their last home game of the season here, honoring the three senior players, Isabella Bensel, Grace Griffin, and Morgan Smith. Their moving tributes to parents, family, and friends who supported the girls through their high school volleyball careers brought tears to many of us. Then those girls went out and played hard to defeat Horizon Christian in an exciting match.
Our high school and junior high school rodeo athletes had their final fall rodeo in Colville the weekend of Oct. 6–8. I haven’t received any results yet, but Joslyn Arnold, Peyton Sanchey, and Blaine Arnold have had a great fall season. Now they can take a break, practice, and look forward to their spring season.
Other local cowgirls and tiny cowboy had a great finish to their West Klickitat Posse Saddle Club Buckle Series horse playdays last Sunday, Oct. 8. Little 1 ½- year-old Pacen Stephens thoroughly enjoyed his first season, participating in the Lead Line division. He delighted his “fans” at every playday as he waved at all of us through his entire events. What a little star he is. He was thrilled to receive his awards of a cool folding chair and his very own bucket. Jentry Hoctor, age 9, finished second overall in her age division, also receiving a really cool folding rocking chair with a leather WKPSC label. Bailey Rickman placed first and won the buckle in that age group. If you know Bailey and have ever seen her compete on her good horse Henry, you know this isn’t her first buckle for this great family program.
Bailey’s sister Riley placed second in the next older age group, and Jocee Hoctor placed first, bringing home a beautiful buckle. I should add Bailey, Riley, and Jocee also participate in middle school volleyball, so those girls have had very full schedules this fall. They are all great competitors, no matter the sport.
The Hoctor girls’ mom, Jaecee, placed second in the adult division. Aubrey Stephens also competed in the adult division, participating in her very first season of this buckle series. We will enjoy seeing a lot more of Pacen and his mama competing in the years to come. This is such a great program for kids learning to compete in pole and barrel events, and the dedication of the many adults who work hard all year to plan and put on these playdays is very appreciated. A special thanks goes to Jim McLean, Martha Parsons and Pat Shamek for all they do each year. There are so many others who help in many ways, I won’t try to name them all, because I’m sure I’ll miss some. Thank you all.
