The local Humane Society members have decided that, in the future, when circumstances justify, a paid officer, such as a deputy sheriff, will be sent out to investigate cases of cruelty to animals, and all parties convicted will be fined. Special attention is called to cases in which people go away, and leave cats and dogs behind without making provision for feeding them.
Hitherto Messrs. C.D. Nickelsen and Stranahan have been investigating complaints. This society is doing fine work in a quiet way, but urges the public to cooperate by reporting all cases of cruelty to animals.

Bids Accepted On New Church
Mid-States Construction Co. of The Dalles has won the main contract for building the new Hood River Valley Christian Church in west Hood River.
Three local bidders also figured in work on the church, according to Dick Radliff of the church building committee
Carl Krieg Millwork will have the millwork contract, Russell Best will do the plumbing, and Huotte Machine Shop has the steel contract, Radliff said. Kennelly Glass of The Dalles has the glass contract.
Construction is scheduled to start in early February. Ground leveling has been completed and preparations have been made for the floor slab, plumbing and electrical installations …

Slingshot Snipers Hit Moving Motorist From Hotel Window
Two slingshot snipers operating from an upstairs window at Hotel Dalles injured a local motorist shortly after midnight.
David Pierce ... received out-patient treatment at The Dalles General Hospital for a bleeding head wound. He was taken to the hospital by city ambulance.
Pierce was hit by a glass marble propelled with enough velocity to penetrate the window of the car and inflict the wound as he was driving by the hotel, city police said. Two Madras High School youths, one aged 17 and the other 16, were responsible, police said.
The boys, here in connection with The Dalles-Madras basketball game Friday night, also hit a vehicle driven by Allen Huston, ... police said.
In addition, slingshot missiles damaged windows in two hotel rooms.
The Madras school paid $30 for the window damage. Wasco County Juvenile Counselor John Cain said an order of transfer is being prepared so that the offense may be taken before Juvenile Court in the county of residence, Jefferson County.
