Last week, Celilo Falls was remembered by Curt Leslie, Gary Conley and Lucile Stephens. Leslie dated it to the 1950s by the shoes, from shoe store adds in a 11,000-image collection built by a parent. “Celilo wasn’t as I had imagined, just one place, but ten miles of places,” Leslie said. Conley went to school with two Celilo residents, “good students, much smarter than me,” who never returned senior year. He remembered the day a Native fisher fell from his platform, which was slippery from dragging fish. He was pulled up by his saftey line, a requirement made in the 1950s. A fisher downstream caught his hat. You could hear the river’s roar for at least a quarter mile. Conley also remembered Highway 30 and two railroads running through the center of Celilo Village. Almost every year, someone was killed on those roads. And Stephens saw Celilo at 6 years old, recalling each fisher had their own particular platform spot.
