First-ever Music Festival of the Gorge Sept. 19
The first-ever Music Festival of the Gorge will be held this weekend in conjunction with the Gorge Kids Triathalon — on Saturday, Sept. 19, and Kids Triathalon on Sept. 20 — at the Hood River Waterfront Amphitheater.
The event is a fundraiser for the Matt Klee Scholarship Fund to provide music support in the Hood River County School District. Cash donations will be collected at the festival, as will those via text through the Hood River Education Foundation.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket and a picnic, or pick up food at one of the many waterfront-area businesses.
Coordinators Max Reitz (of Cripple Hop) and Damon Clegg (of Kleevage) have a diverse lineup of local musicians donating their time, and the City of Hood River is donating the use of the amphitheater.
Klee, who passed away May 30, 2014, from injuries sustained during a bicycle crash at Whistler Bike Park in Canada, loved both sports and music.

HR Library hosts Songwriters in the Round Sept. 16
Songwriters in the Round, hosted by the ambassador of song Steve Hale, is a program where three songwriters Steven Hale, Tracy Klass, and Lincoln Crockett each take turns playing an original composition and sharing about why and how they wrote it. The event will be held at Hood River Library on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.Three sonically creative artists will present their hand crafted-audio treats to you totally acoustically, regaling beautiful melodies, intriguing chord changes, and compelling stories about their songs.
Lunar Eclipse viewing at Discovery Center Sept. 27
Columbia Gorge Discovery Center hosts a Lunar Eclipse viewing, Sunday, Sept. 27. Take a look through telescopes with Bob Yoesle from Friends of the Goldendale Observatory at the rising Harvest Moon Lunar Eclipse beginning at 6 p.m., followed by an optional interpretive walk at 6:30 p.m. on the Riverfront Trail. The trail is paved and handicap-accessible. Bring your friends and family for this free event, but please leave pets at home. Gorge author Antieau releases ‘Maternal Instincts’
Kim Antieau’s “Maternal Instincts,” a thriller set in a fictional Columbia River Gorge town, has just been released by Green Snake Publishing.
“Maternal Instincts” features Katie Kelly, an impulsive ex-cop from Portland who has moved to Beauty Falls, WA, the site of a family vacation home and a crime which still haunts Kelly and the town.
Part of the novel’s background was inspired by real-life crimes that took place in the Columbia River Gorge some years ago.
“In Maternal Instincts” says Antieau,” I have tried to be respectful and cognizant of the toll crime takes — especially the crime of murder. Terrible crimes don’t just affect the family. These crimes reverberate through a community.”
Antieau has had many novels and non-fiction books published since her first book, “The Jigsaw Woman,” appeared in 1994. She is also a librarian, working for the Fort Vancouver Regional Library, is studying to become a private investigator, and last year conceived and produced a successful community arts installation in Stevenson, Washington called “We Are Here: Geography of the Heart.”

Amber Charms dance Sept. 19
On Saturday, Sept. 19, Scarlet Thistle Studio presents Amber Charms at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River at 7:30 p.m. Showcasing a selection of award-winning performers and internationally acclaimed artists from the Pacific Northwest, and beyond, Amber Charms displays traditional and contemporary interpretations of the ancient art form known as belly dance.
