‘Oregon Stories’ in HR April 1
The 12-piece Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) announces its most ambitious project ever: a musical triptych that tells the stories of three Oregonians who triumphed over racial and gender discrimination to achieve inspiring, notable success. “Oregon Stories” features original compositions by guitarist Mark Orton, pianist Darrell Grant, and Douglas Detrick, an award-winning composer and trumpeter. KMHD-FM host Jessica Rand produced the audio interviews which comprise the foundation for this musical chronicle of living history. Radio broadcast of a studio recording is scheduled for late 2016, when the “Oregon Stories” album will be released. The Hood River show is April 1 at The Columbia Center for the Arts. The story of George Akiyama, who was threatened with violence — and a fellow citizen who stepped forward to support him when he came home from serving in World War II, will be told by historian Linda Tamura. $15 general admission, $12 PJCE members, $5 Seniors and Students with ID. Enjoy wine/beer tastings, Irish inspired appetizers, friends and family while supporting local artists in an intimate house setting, soaring Gorge views and favorite Hood River musician Kerry Williams along with Portland's own, Barry Crannell. Criminally fun and Celtic be this duo! Doors open at 6PM to mingle.
Once a year they knock the dust off their repertoire of Irish music, sit down, pick up their assortment of guitars, bouzouki, mandolins, banjo, and a song or three, and just kick arse. This once a year thing is their first Crime. Kerry Williams and Barry Crannell have been at this musical partnership for comin' on four decades now, but still live too far apart - Crime #2. Their treatment of traditional tunes, both American and Irish, is often a bit less than traditional, sometimes just bloody irreverent - Crime #3. Oh yeah, they were winners on the Gong Show - Crime #4.
Pull up a seat, taste a cold one, get comfortable, have a good listen, and a few laughs - "Celtic Crimes" is in the house
Proceeds benefit Gorge Community Foundation along with the artists of course! Sláinte! Cuir bheith linn.
