WHITE SALMON — On Feb. 1, Columbia High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) members Raina McAllister and Josie Dickey competed in the District 8 FFA Extemporaneous Public Speaking career development event. They traveled to Vancouver, Wash., and competed against FFA members from Southwest Washington.
McAllister and Dickey were given three agriculture-related topics to choose from. Then, they each had 20 minutes to use textbooks, news publications and the internet to write four- to six-minute speeches about their assigned topic.
They presented their speeches to judges, who determined if they would make it to the finals. In the first round, Dickey placed second and McAllister placed first.
McAllister proceeded to the finals, where she repeated the process with a different topic. In the final round, McAllister was assigned the question, “What kind(s) of technology do farmers use in the field to help the environment?”
She presented a speech about solar powered irrigation, water conservation, precision agriculture/GPS and livestock monitoring. This speech earned McAllister a third-place finish, which sends her on to state.
McAllister will have the opportunity to compete in Extemporaneous Public Speaking again on May 8-12 at the Washington State FFA Convention in Pullman at Washington State University.
