Writers: got an hour or two?
Share your talents and ideas at a new program starting this month at Columbia Center for the Arts called “Writer in Residence.”
“We’re trying something new at the Art Center. It’s a short-term writers-in-residence experiment, and by short term we mean 1-3 hours,” said executive director Kerry Cobb.
From July 10-31 (on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays) the center is inviting writers or all types to take a turn sitting in the gallery to talk with visitors.
“We are inviting writers of any type — poets, fiction writers, non-fiction writers, cookbook writers, playwrights, how-to writers, and others. You can talk about your writing, show off your books, write them a poem, share a recipe, talk about your play — you get the idea,” Cobb said.
Sign up for a 1-3 hour shift any time from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 10- 12, July 17- 19, and July 24-26 and July 31 by emailing Cobb at director@columbiaarts.org.
“If it’s a success, we’ll extend the hours into August,” she said.
“We are doing this because it sounds like fun. We want to engage our visitors with a little literary talk, show off our area writers, and then see what happens.”
The center will provide a chair and small table in the gallery window, a bottle of water, and a window sign that says “Our Writer in Residence is In.” Sessions will be posted on social media platforms, too.
Writers in residence are asked “to gently engage with visitors if they approach you, to bring a bio people can read if they wish, and to talk about your work or have a quote to give people or write them a poem — you’re creative so we know you’ll think of something. You are welcome to silently read or write at your table when not engaged with visitors.”
Writers are asked to provide a photo and a link to your website or info about your work if available.
