To support public health, Streets Alive! Hood River won’t be holding its second annual event this summer, instead giving away free bikes to kids. “With schools, playgrounds, and so many of the activities that make us happy and healthy closed, we thought this would be a great way to share the love of riding bikes,” said project co-coordinator Cindy Walbridge.
With Thrive Hood River as their sponsor, Streets Alive! received a $500 grant from Wal-Mart Giving to buy five new bikes for kids who need them in the community. They partnered with the Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital Foundation to also include new bike helmets, and locks were donated by community members.
Kids entered to win by submitting drawings to a coloring contest titled “What’s your favorite place to bike or play?” which was shared with help from Latinos en Acción, The Next Door, the Hood River County School District, and others. More than 30 entries came in from throughout the valley; five winners were randomly selected: Three from Parkdale, and one each from Odell and Hood River.
This bike giveaway was such a success that it will be an ongoing annual event with Streets Alive! and Thrive, according to co-coordinator Silvan Shawe. “Everyone should be able to have safe and fun bike rides and we are working to support kids biking everywhere in Hood River County.”
