BINGEN — The City of Bingen will be hosting a public hearing in Council Chambers at 112 N Ash St. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.
In August, Bingen voters overwhelmingly passed a Public Safety Sales Tax of 0.1% ($10 on every $1,000 sales in Bingen) to help fund police and fire services. Thank you for your support, voters! This amount helps but it doesn't fully resolve the budget issue.
The Legislature passed Engrossed Substitute House Bill 2015 in May 2025. HB2015 creates a $100M statewide 3-year grant program to fund law enforcement across Washington. It also provides cities and counties with the ability to levy a 0.1% ($10 on every $1,000 sales) without going to the voters. This "Public Safety Enhancement Sales Tax" can only be used to fund public defense, domestic violence services, jail costs, and other associated criminal justice expenses.
Bingen's City Council is considering levying this Public Safety Enhancement Sales Tax. This would increase the sales tax rate from 7.6% to 7.7% (Klickitat County has the lowest sales tax rate in the state at 7.5% and Bingen's rate would still be the 2nd lowest).
Councilors want to hear from Bingen businesses and residents. Please submit a public comment to administrator@bingenwashington.org, call City Hall at 509-493-2122 x1, or attend the public hearing on October 7 at 6 p.m. and let us know what you think!
