The Columbia High Bruins recorded their third straight win in WIAA Class 1A Trico League girls soccer with a 4-1 victory over the Castle Rock High Rockets (0-8-1 league, 2-9-2 overall) on Oct. 17 at Castle Rock High School.
With the win, the Bruins (5-4 league, 7-5 overall) moved into third place in the six-team league, and they improved their position to possibly secure a spot in the district playoffs starting Oct. 31.
The Bruins, guided by first-year Coach Jimmy Pardo, saw their win streak end after a 10-1 loss to the No. 4-ranked La Center High Wildcats (8-0 league, 13-1 overall) at Columbia High School in White Salmon.
“I was just really impressed with the job that our assistant coaches Parker Walker and Wyatt Cohen did and seeing the team doing as well as they are and being in contention for postseason games is great,” said Pardo, who just returned to the Bruins on Oct. 20 following an administrative leave of absence. “The team is doing extremely well, and I feel very proud of them. We’ve got several games this week, including a special senior night event on Thursday, which will be nice as our only senior to be honored in the ceremony will be Sarah VonRueden.”
The Bruins were led offensively versus Castle Rock by junior forward Saylor Hauge, who had a hat trick (three goals); junior Sequoia Cohen also scored a goal. Sophomore Sage Witherrite had three assists.
Hauge leads the Bruins in scoring with 12 goals and five assists. Cohen has eight goals and six assists. Witherrite scored a goal versus La Center, and Kiera Bucher had an assist.
“It’s been an interesting season and I’m just glad that the team persevered and pushed through during the time I was gone,” said Pardo. “I’m just so happy to be back and I’m ready to help our team finish out the season as best as we can and hopefully make it to the district playoffs. We’re getting ready for a fun conclusion to the season.”
The Bruins have a grueling schedule this week with three games in five days, including their Oct. 24 contest versus the Seton Catholic High Cougars (7-1 league, 10-4 overall) in Vancouver. The Bruins play on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. in a nonleague home contest versus the Fort Vancouver High Trappers (3-11), of the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League. Columbia follows with a district play-in matchup at 2 p.m. Saturday versus the King’s Way Christian High Knights (4-5 league, 7-6 overall) at Seton Catholic High School.
The Bruins are in third place in the league standings, just ahead of the fourth-place Knights. La Center is atop the league, followed by Seton Catholic.
