First place in Greater Columbia B League volleyball standings was up for grabs Tuesday night when Lyle visited Klickitat for the first of two seasonal meetings.
In other Tuesday action, Trout Lake entertained Glenwood in a battle that could have a bearing on district tournament seeding.
The Enterprise went to press before the outcomes of the two matches were known.
Lyle 3, at Riverside Christian 0 --
The Cougars shut out the Crusaders in league action Sept. 22 in Yakima, thanks to complementary offensive and defensive games.
For the match, Lyle served 25 aces, led by exchange student Sabrina Bohme, who converted 17 of 19 serves, 10 for aces. Junior Lindsey Blaine (9-10) had seven aces, and senior Kristina Lucas (15-16) added five.
Blaine also had a strong game at the net, finishing with 13 kills and six blocks.
Klickitat at Wasco County Tournament --
In a tournament they have dominated in the past, the Vandals (7-1 overall) finished third out of eight teams Sept. 22 at Maupin, Ore.
Klickitat won two of three sets to advance to the championship bracket as the number-two team in its pool. Condon, Ore., which beat Klickitat 15-13, was number one.
The Vandals opened defense of their tournament title with a three-set victory over the South Wasco Redsides, 15-6, 10-15, 15-8.
But their bid for a repeat was dashed by Wahtonka, 15-8, 15-12. The best Klickitat could do was third place, which it earned by taking two of three sets from Ione, Ore., 15-9, 12-15, 15-8.
"That's the first time we've lost that tournament," Vandals Coach Kirk Huwe noted. "Some of the teams there were state championship material. We just didn't respond to the challenge."
Klickitat 3, at Bickleton 0 --
The Vandals won their fifth GCB match on Sept. 21, upending the Pirates in three, 15-0, 15-5, 15-3.
Statistics and additional details were unavailable at press time.
LaSalle 3, at Trout Lake 2 --
The Mustangs led 2-games-to-1 after the third set and had the early lead in the fifth set, but they couldn't close out the Lightning in a Sept. 21 league match.
Trout Lake dropped the first set 15-11 after leading 8-0, but rallied from 8-1 and 7-2 deficits to win sets two and three 15-12, 15-11.
In the fourth set, a 15-8 defeat, mental errors cost the Mustangs' a chance to go home early.
Noted Mustangs Coach Jeff Agar: "We celebrated too early after winning the third game."
In the fifth and deciding set, Trout Lake got off to a 6-1 start before eventually losing 15-9.
For the match, the Mustangs put 90 percent of their serves in play, led by sophomore Stephanie Bennett (30-31) and senior Amber Dalziel (21-23). Senior Linda Whigham and soph Sierra Long each served two aces.
Highlights for Trout Lake included Whigham's career-high 14 kills. She also had five blocks and nine digs.
Dalziel added eight kills and four digs, and Long had three kills and five digs. Bennett made 23 assists, seven digs and four saves.
Junior varsity action saw LaSalle win two of three, 15-9, 15-0, 12-15.
At Lyle 3, Glenwood 0 --
Solid serving and passing were the keys to the Cougars' straight-sets victory Sept. 18 over the Eagles.
Lyle won by scores of 15-6, 15-5, 15-6 to run its GCB record to 4-0.
"As a team, we served and passed the ball well on serve receive, and over 50 percent of our assists resulted in kills," Cougars Coach Lori Smith noted.
At Klickitat 3, Trout Lake 0 --
The Vandals remained unbeaten on the season with a straight-sets sweep of the Mustangs Sept. 18.
Klickitat raised its GCB record to 4-0 with 15-1, 15-10, 15-1 victories over Trout Lake, which dropped to 1-3 in league.
Mustangs Coach Jeff Agar attributed Trout Lake's downfall to inconsistent passing and serve reception.
"We were scrappy," he noted, "especially in game two, but we didn't dig out too many of their hits. Still, it was the best we've played at their place in three years."
The Mustangs served at a 91-percent clip, led by sophomore Sierra Long (11-11) and senior Amber Dalziel (9-10).
Other highlights included sophomore Stephanie Bennett's eight assists, and senior Linda Whigham's two blocks and six kills.
The junior varsity match went to Klickitat in three sets: 12-15, 15-4, 15-6.
