Trout Lake School's middle school Destination Imagination team competed at the Washington State Tournament on April 9 in Wenatchee and took first place.
The team chose the problem "Live. It's RaDio DI."
The challenge required the team to create a story that could be told without pictures -- an original RaDio show that would be performed live for an audience. The presentation needed to include a commercial that made an outrageous claim for the product, and of course, a "breaking news bulletin," an eccentric character, a cliffhanger, live sound effects, and allow the team to demonstrate its many fine talents.
All this needed to be done in an eight minute time frame and that it would not know the title of its "late breaking news" until one minute before the performance began.
The team chose to set their solution in a 1940s radio studio where the actors were broadcasting the week's episode of "New York Insane Cases." The events of the story were told by a famous detective as he interviews the distraught widow and the eccentric old lady who lives across the way with her purple door and an apartment full of petunias.
The suspense was put on hold for the sponsor, Inflatable Skirts, made appropriate for any occasion simply by the force of your vacuum cleaner.
The team created sound effects to simulate walking, a door opening, a window breaking and music played by team created pan pipes.
At the regional competition, the team received a Renaissance Award for its clear and imaginative story telling, effective costumes and excellent performance. The team had researched the clothing of the period. It then searched through closets, garage sales and second hand stores for styles that would represent the period. Even their hair was done to fit the mood.
The victory at the state tournament gives the team the right to represent Washington at the Global DI Competition in Knoxville, Tenn., in late May.
The team is currently busy making a few adjustments on its solution and attempting to raise the money for the trip. Any and all help would be appreciated.
The team is composed of Tasha Johnson, Anna Nekea, Gail Phares, Jessie Robertson, Veronica Glenn and coach Laurie Sherburne.
