The books are back on the shelf and the Hood River County Library will open for business in its temporary quarters on Monday.
June Knudson, county librarian, said the original July 1 opening had to be delayed to allow for construction of an emergency exit in the Dean Building at the corner of Sixth and State streets. However, completion of that work and the issuance of an occupancy permit are expected by the end of the week.
On June 22 the 90-year-old Carnegie building closed its doors. Volunteers and staff had boxed about 35,000 books for the interim library and placed another 30 percent into long-term storage. The remainder of the materials were then transported across the street where they were set up for a 10-month stay while the $4 million library renovation and expansion project is underway.
Meanwhile, the county Parks and Buildings crew has been preparing to relocate the historic Roe-Parker house which stands in the way of construction.
A later addition to the vintage dwelling has been demolished and the historic house is scheduled to be moved on July 28 to a county-owned lot off Sherman Avenue just east of Horsefeathers Restaurant. Streets will be closed to traffic between 5-6 a.m. for the move.
