The boys on the Summit Snowboard Team can still call themselves state champs after winning the coveted SATO Cup for the fifth straight year at the April 11-12 state championships.
Competing without returning state champion Ben Connors, Summit’s Varsity I team was still able to claim second place in both the Slopestyle and Boardercross competitions, which helped them accumulate enough points to secure the overall title.
Ashland outdueled Summit in the Boardercross competition by nearly six seconds (149.60 to 155.53), while Barlow outlasted Summit in Slopestyle by 55 points (1,145 to 1,090). However, despite falling off the pace as a team, Summit did have one individual winner. Junior Paul Rovianek took the Slopestyle individual title with a score of 353.
Senior Colin Franger placed fourth overall with a score of 310, while sophomore Finny England finished sixth with 288 points. Senior Tad Hukari tied for 19th (245 points) to round out the Varsity I results.
Individual Boardercross times were not available at press time. Meanwhile, the third leg of the SATO Cup, the half pipe, was not completed this year.
On the girls side, an undermanned team of four girls lost its state title to Ashland, which won both team competitions.
Missing three of its top riders, Komisa Schwartzel, Meghan Ferns and Grace Rickenbach, Summit placed second in Slopestyle and fourth in Boardercross.
Sophomore Mariam Appel was the top individual finisher for Summit in the Slopestyle, taking 10th overall. Junior Lisa Page finished 11th. Freshman Brisa Jessup and junior Bethany Hoikka also competed.
