Winter Recreation: A free, guided snowshoe walk through the Trout Lake Preserve will take place this Saturday. Wildlife biologist Harold Cole, former manager of the Conboy Lake National Wildlife Refuge, will lead the two-hour walk through this outstanding natural resource area.

Participants are asked to meet in the Mt. Adams Ranger Station parking lot at 1 p.m. For those who don’t own a pair, a limited number of snowshoes will be available to borrow, on a first-come basis.

Swimming: The Hood River Valley Swim Team’s Scott Bergstrom, Connor Webb and Mariah Rawding tore up the pool in Federal Way this past weekend at the Pacific All-Star Meet representing Team Oregon.

Rawding set three new HRVST records for 11- to 12-year-old girls in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.80; old record set by Neticia Enesi of 1:04.93 was set in 2001), 100 breast stroke (1:13.58; Rawding held the old record at 1:13.71) and the 100 individual medley (1:04.24; old record of 1:06.23 also set by Enesi, in 2000).

The boys weren’t to be outdone. Bergstrom established four new team records for 13-14 boys; he lowered his 200 freestyle record to 1:55.02, his 100 butterfly record to 57.56 seconds, and his 200 butterfly record to 2:03.21. He also set the 500 freestyle record with a 5:00.79, beating Eddie Mielke’s record of 5:07.24 set in 1997.

Webb was celebrating his birthday weekend by doing some fast swimming of his own. He lowered his own HRVST 100 breast record to 1:05.32 and his 200 IM record to 2:08.97. He also broke the 400 IM record by swimming a 4:37.18 to eclipse Bergstrom’s standard of 4:39.12 set last month.

In the team competition, the Oregon swimmers placed fifth overall, against teams from British Columbia, Western Washington and from Northern and Southern California.

Noted All-Star Coach Shelly Rawding of Husum: “It was very hard to score points, but Scott and Mariah were able to do so. And all for all three swimmers, their relays scored as well.”

Jr. High Boys Basketball: Wayne M. Henkle Middle School’s eighth-grade, seventh-grade and blended teams will tip off their 2009 seasons next Tuesday at home against Wind River (Carson). The first games will get underway at 3:30 p.m.

On Thursday, the Grizzlies hit the road for a trip to Washougal and games against Canyon Creek.

All told, Henkle will play a 10-game schedule that consists of two games against Wind River and one each against Canyon Creek, Castle Rock, Hockinson, Jemtegaard (Washougal), Kalama, La Center, View Ridge (Ridgefield) and Woodland.
