Two local Babe Ruth youth baseball teams will co-host the 2002 13-and-Under State Tournament Friday through Tuesday in Hood River. Eight teams from northern Oregon will compete in the tournament, and all games will be played at Traner Field (Hood River Valley High School). Round-robin play begins Friday at 9 a.m., semifinals will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. and noon, and the championship will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. Call Chuck Johnisee at 386-2062 with questions or to volunteer.
McCubbin’s Gulch Scramble Saturday
It’s that time of year once again for the McCubbin’s Gulch Scramble, held off Highway 26 near Mt. Hood. Set for Sunday, the challenging, adrenaline-charged, obstacle-ridden adventure run will take competitors over creeks, logs, hills and brush. Awards will be given in 24 divisions (12 men’s, 12 women’s), and a post-event party sponsored by Lucky Lab Brew Pub only add to the fun. Registrations are due Friday and cost $20 per entry. Couples team up to win golf scramble
Fifty-eight golfers turned out to Indian Creek Golf Course last Friday for the first Couples Scramble of the summer. Mike Roberts, Sandy Porter, and Jean and Jake Morgan teamed up to take top honors with a nine-hole score of 30. Second place went to the team of Tom and Susan Shepherd/Kirk and Sherie Zack; while Mark and Serina Amerman/David and Sarah Buchard finished third. In the Long Drive competition, Ted Lohr won the men’s division and Carol Wells won on the women’s side. Closest to Pin for the men was Larry Bowe, and for the women, Heidi Struck.
Diana Mazeski shot an 86 to post the low gross score for last Thursday’s Day’s Play at Indian Creek. Pauline Kennedy shot an 89 to take second and Jo Smith a 92 for third. Vera Hawk posted the low net score of 64, and was followed by Irene Kiyokawa with a 71, and Carol Emmerson with a 72. No Day’s Play will be held this Thursday due to the 3-Club Tournament.
Gear recycling program at Windance
Would you like to share the sport of windsurfing with someone? Local windsurfing retailer, Windance, has initiated a new program to help you do just that. The Gear Recycling Program’s goal is to remove some of the financial obstacles involved with windsurfing, and to introduce newcomers to the sport. Bridge of Gods Festival returns Aug. 10
The third-annual Bridge of the Gods Kiteboarding Festival will return to Stevenson, Wash., Aug. 10-11. Sponsored by Naish Kiteboarding, Wipika and Ikiteboard.com, the growing amateur event boasts many of the sports top names, including 2000 champ Adam Koch and 2001 champ David Tyburski, of Hood River. Wind-permitting, the freestyle competition will begin Aug. 10 at 10 a.m. at Stevenson’s East Point, a.k.a. “Kite Beach.” Athletes can register online at www.freestyle.tv.
Basketball shooting clinic at HRV
Youth basketball players entering grades 6-12 are encouraged to sign up for a shooting clinic, to be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 12 at Hood River Valley High School. International shooting instructor Todd Cotton will provide both individualized and specialized shooting instruction, and each participant will receive a written evaluation.
